bari, trulli, car, hire

We all come to Bari and indeed Italy in general to marvel at the wonderful architecture, from the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel or the leaning tower of Pisa. Well if you are in Bari then there is another form of construction to view – the Truili. These are limestone dwellings found in the southern region of Puglia and are remarkable examples of drywall. Now if you have a car then drive to Alberobello which is a small town in the Bari region that has been deemed a World Heritage Site because of the abundance of the trullis.

The construction technique has its origins in prehistoric times and is still used in the Bar Region. The trulli is assembled roughly worked limestone boulders collected from the surrounding fields and sport pyramidal or domed roofs built up of corbelled limestone slabs. Also look out for the strange symbols, connected with Christian, primitive and some ay even magic traditions.

These buildings in Bari are known all over the world for their singularity represent one of the best examples of the Italian popular architecture. They can also be found in Brindisi and Taranto too. They really are worth a visit.
