Bari is a busy port city and capital of the Puglia region in Italy. Historically it was a very important sailing port and is still one of the economic centres of the south of Italy. The city of Bari itself consists of 4 distinct urban quarters. To the south is the Murrattiano which is modern and vibrant stretching from the square to the promenade on the sea front. This area also boasts the primary shopping district with the via Sparano and via Argiro. To the north and extremely close developed next to the old town are the 2 modern harbors with spectacular views of the 3 cathedrals. This area is also where Bari lets its hair down and parties within the major nightlife districts.
The modern city centre was the subject of rapid and somewhat ill considered development in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Last but not least are the outer suburbs which sprung up at a rate in the nineteen nineties. The city also redeveloped Bari Airport and now has many connections Europe wide including Stanstead airport.
